Force One were engaged to deliver specialist suction excavation services as part of a major infrastructure project designed to reduce congestion and improve regional connectivity. Spanning approximately 7.1 km of single carriageway over a three-year programme, the scheme supports improved traffic flow, stronger transport links, and long-term economic growth.

From the outset, safe excavation practices were central to the project, with vacuum excavation playing a critical role in minimising risk of service strike across the site.

Key Challenges on the Project

The following challenges needed to be addressed during the works

  • The Challenge: Accessibility

Due to the scale and terrain of the project, several areas were inaccessible to standard suction excavation units due to their off road nature.

    The Outcome
Force One adopted a collaborative approach to develop tailored vacuum excavation solutions for restricted areas. A ‘Lunch and Learn’ session was delivered to the project team, highlighting a range of specialist equipment designed for challenging environments. Operating one of the UK’s few 8×8 rough-terrain suction excavators. Built on a military-style chassis with eight-wheel drive and high ground clearance, it is specifically engineered to perform reliably in challenging and difficult ground conditions. This was successfully deployed to overcome the accessibility issues.

  • The Challenge: Additional Competence

During the project, updated industry standards required all operatives involved in excavation activities to hold EUSR Levels 1 and 2 qualifications. With a large workforce already working on the project, this created a transitional challenge in maintaining compliance without disrupting works.

    The Outcome
Force One implemented a structured training programme to ensure continued compliance. By clearly communicating training schedules and maintaining operational flexibility, suction excavation works continued without interruption. Within six months, over 75% of operatives achieved the required qualifications, with 100% compliance reached across all personnel involved in vacuum excavation activities on the project.

  • Supporting onsite culture

In addition to delivering high-quality suction excavation services, the project also hosted the Lighthouse Charity’s MakeItVisible campaign. Force One proudly support the Lighthouse charity reinforcing the importance of workforce wellbeing alongside safe dig practices, and showcasing our partnership vacuum excavator on site.

Delivering Safe, Efficient Vacuum Excavation

Works on the project continue to demonstrate Force One’s expertise in suction excavation. By combining specialist equipment, skilled operatives, and a strong focus on safety, Force One consistently delivers safe dig outcomes on complex infrastructure projects.
